Senior Systems Engineer

St John Ambulance is the nation’s leading first aid charity.
Every year, 400,000 people learn how to save a life through our training programmes, including hundreds of thousands of young people. Our volunteers provide first aid in their communities, keeping people safe at events, and working alongside the NHS in response to 999 calls. We’re also always campaigning to raise awareness of first aid and directly educate the public.
As the Senior Systems Engineer for St John Ambulance, you will help us support our user base of 2,500 employees and 15,000 employees, many of whom operate in remote areas throughout England, by ensuring that our IT infrastructure is secure and up-to-date.
This role is diverse and you will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks such as; providing expertise on infrastructure, leading or assisting on new projects and working alongside development, project and support teams to design and implement upgrades to our security (both LAN and WAN), upgrade legacy systems and assist with troubleshooting with 3rd party suppliers.
We have recently gone through an improvement of our IT infrastructure and moved many of our services to the cloud, we are also currently working on several new projects including a new Azure platform (so experience with Azure is desirable).
While the Senior Systems Engineer does not have any direct reports, this role reports into our Infrastructure Manager. You will be responsible for representing the Infrastructure Manager and leading the team from time to time, so must therefore be passionate about mentoring and coaching people. You will also have the ability to identify cost savings and better processes and technologies to help drive the team forward.
- Design, implement and maintain the security, resilience and performance of Local and Wide Area Networks in use by SJA.
- Be a first point of reference for external customers or internal stakeholders on technical questions relating to infrastructure.
- Leading support on Incidents within Infrastructure agreed SLA’s and to a high degree of customer satisfaction.
- Monitor the capacity requirements of the network and security devices, reporting on any changes to the resource requirements and suggesting changes where necessary.
