Volunteers thanked for tireless work during the summer floods

The outstanding contribution of St John Ambulance volunteers who gave emergency support in the areas devastated by floods was recognised last night at a special ceremony (Thursday 9 August).

Over a hundred volunteers and staff attended the reception at the charity’s historical headquarters in London, where they were thanked personally by St John Ambulance trustees and senior management. Messages of appreciation were also read out from a number of MPs including the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

‘Once again our volunteers have shown that when it counts, they are there,’ said Harry Dymond, Commissioner Operations St John Ambulance. ‘When the communities affected by the floods needed help, the response from our volunteers was overwhelming.  We had volunteers from 21 counties working day and night to give aid for as long as they were needed. This reception is our chance to give something back and to say thank you to them.’

Sir Brian Jenkins, Prior of the Priory of England and the Islands, marked the occasion by presenting commemorative certificates to each county involved.
