New health and safety statistics released
New health and safety
statistics released today by the Health and Safety Executive
(HSE) reveal a reduction in the numbers of people killed, injured
or made ill by work during 2007/08.
Sue Killen, Chief Executive of St John
Ambulance, which trains half a million people every year in first
aid and health and safety, commented: ‘The reduction is good news
and shows that businesses are increasingly recognising that health
and safety and first aid have important roles to play in the
workplace.

‘We’ve seen more people coming forward to be first aiders and we
often hear how they’ve used first aid to care for their colleagues,
whether it’s on a building site or in an office. It’s reassuring to
have those anecdotal stories backed up with positive
statistics.
‘While the reduction in injury and deaths is welcomed we’d like
to see it reduce even further. Organisations like St John Ambulance
can advise and train businesses on how to carry out a risk
assessment to determine the type of health and safety training
required. We are also working closely with the HSE to revise first
aid at work regulations, due next year, which we hope will help
more businesses find it easier to comply with the guidance.’
