iPhone first aid app launches
St John Ambulance has officially launched a first aid iPhone app
that could be the difference between life and
death. The app gives life saving advice that is easy to
process at pace and under pressure.
A simple application with a clear, attractive and intuitive
graphic interface, St John Ambulance’s first aid app covers
key major and minor emergencies and contains
additional guidance on treating infants. The app provides advice on
emergency situations such as choking, severe bleeding and
heart attacks. It’s also available for iPod Touch
users.
Popular app
Introduced as a beta version in February, St John Ambulance’s
app became the UK’s best selling medical app, with more than 2,200
downloads to date despite no marketing or promotion. It has been
downloaded over 10,000 times across the globe.
Be the difference
While we would encourage people to take the responsibility to learn first aid themselves, our app makes our knowledge and experience in first aid easily accessible to iPhone users.

The full launch of the app coincides with a hard-hitting ad
campaign depicting five common situations* in
which first aid could have been the difference between a
life lost and a life saved.
Research** highlights the lack of first
aid knowledge among the British public: almost two-thirds
of people (59%) don’t feel they could save a life in an
emergency, while a quarter would stand by as someone dies.
Advice in your pocket
Sue Killen, CEO, St John Ambulance, said: ‘We believe that
anyone who needs first aid should receive it. Our latest research
shows that’s just not happening. While we would encourage people to
take the responsibility to learn first aid themselves, our
app makes our knowledge and experience in first aid easily
accessible to iPhone users.’
St John Ambulance’s first aid app is available from the
Apple App Store now for £2.39.
St John Ambulance is committed to ensuring everyone has the
basic first aid knowledge that could save someone's life. As well
as the iPhone app, customers can get a free pocket-sized
guide by texting LIFE to 85010 or
requesting a guide online.
*The five common scenarios tackled in
the adverts and in the free first aid guide are: Choking, heart
attack, severe bleeding, unconscious person who is breathing and
one who is not breathing.
**Research conducted by ICM, February
2010, using a weighted sample of 2045 adults aged 18+. ICM is a
