Support provided for end of year spectacular
St John Ambulance treated 348 casualties
and transported over 50 to hospital, as hundreds of thousands of
revellers gathered on the streets of London to celebrate New Year's
Eve.
Over 170 volunteers were deployed in Central London to guarantee
that crowds welcomed in the new year safely.
The event was regarded as one of the busiest New Year's Eve's in
London Ambulance Service history. At the busiest point, 800 calls
an hour were being received .
Dave Bell, Assistant Commissioner (Operations) St John Ambulance
London (Prince of Wales's) District, said he was proud of all the
county's volunteers.
'At St John Ambulance, we are always prepared for a large amount
of casualties at such a high profile event, and the strong team of
experienced and dedicated individuals who gave up their time,
certainly did a very good job.'
St John Ambulance London (Prince of Wales's) District has around
5,000 volunteer members who provide over 500,000 hours of duty
service throughout the year. Typically, in 12 months, they will
treat well over 20,000 people at the popular carnivals, music and
sporting events as well as countless smaller fetes and fayres that
take place throughout the year.
