Our history

St John Ambulance in England (and the Islands) is the country’s
leading first aid training organisation and first aid provider. It
is also one of the largest youth movements.
We have over 23,000 adult members and
nearly 20,000 young members who can be seen in
their distinctive uniforms helping the public throughout the
country on a daily basis.
We train some 575,000 people each year in first
aid and health and Safety and provide treatment and care to some
125,000 patients on an annual basis (many of whom are in
life-threatening situations). We have over 1,000 ambulance
and support vehicles and regularly provide a support
service to the NHS Ambulance Trusts.
Significant events in our recent history include:
2008 Duke of Gloucester attends the St
John’s Day Service at St Paul’s cathedral
- 2007 St John Ambulance adopts its new
Corporate Identity
- 2006 St John Ambulance youth Cadets invited to
present 80th Birthday cards to HM The Queen
- 2005 St John Ambulance provides support to the
NHS responding to the London bombings
- 2004 St John Ambulance provides assists at
Boscastle in Cornwall following unprecedented flash floods
- 2003 St John Ambulance provides first aid to
the Robbie Williams concert at Knebworth
- 2002 St John Ambulance takes part in HM The
Queen’s Golden Jubilee
- 2001 St John Ambulance moves to new
Headquarters adjacent to St John’s Gate, Clerkenwell London
- 2000 Fusion 2000 – First National Youth
Conference held in Sheffield
- 1999 St John Ambulance incorporated as a
Company Limited by Guarantee.
Significant events in the second half of the 20th Century
include:
- 1990 – 1999 St John Ambulance celebrates 90
years of caring
- 1980 – 1989 St John Ambulance Museum opened in
1984 (HRH the Duchess of Gloucester). First London Marathon in
1981 (members cover the whole route)
- 1970 – 1979 St John Ambulance takes part in HM
The Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1978
- 1960 – 1969 State funeral of Sir Winston
Churchill in 1965 (4,000 members on duty)
- 1950 – 1959 The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth
II in 1953 (7,000 members on duty).
