The Open Gate - Museum redevelopment project
The new Museum will show more of its collections in new and
exciting ways. It will use cutting edge technology as well as more
traditional methods of display to bring the fascinating history of
the Order of St John to life.
The new Museum
You will enter the new Museum through a door under the arch
and will come into a low lit wood panelled room. In this
reception space you will feel the atmosphere of the old Tudor
Priory and will be able to watch a short film that gives a
taste of the galleries beyond.
The Link Gallery
On leaving reception, you will enter a dramatic double-height
space, the glass roof revealing views of the high stone walls of
the original gate house. In front of you is an interactive timeline
that reveals significant dates in the 900 year history of the
Order.
The Order Gallery
Through to your right is a gallery exploring the history of the
Order, from its foundation in Jerusalem in 1099 until its departure
from Malta in 1798 under Napoleon. This gallery is dominated by a
central display of model ships, emphasising the Order's naval
might.
The St John Ambulance Gallery
This gallery will explore the role of St John Ambulance as an
international first aid organisation. It will also consider its
significance in both peace and war time, through events such as the
Olympics and the first and second world wars.
The Church Site
The Church site will include a new gallery exploring the history
of the Priory Site in Clerkenwell, as well as a fully equipped
learning centre for use of school parties and adult learners. The
Clorster Garden will also be permanently opened to the public.
