In a world where very few people are willing to do something for
nothing, our volunteers are very special people indeed.
When Bob Maquire dropped out of the Meon Valley plod just
minutes into the race, he didn’t know it, but he was close
to death.
Thankfully for Bob, St John Ambulance volunteers were on duty
that day and one of our amazing volunteers, Graham Smith was by his
side in seconds.
Bob brushed off the offer of help at first, but Graham persisted
and persuaded Bob to let them check him over in the ambulance and
monitor his heart. Graham saw signs of danger and
administered medication. Just four days later, Bob was being fitted
with stents. The fast action of our volunteers helped to avert a
full-blown cardiac arrest.
Amazingly, this year, Bob has come back to complete the Meon
Valley Plod and five marathons!
I do it because I want to give something back⦠to do my bit for the community.
Graham Smith
St John Ambulance volunteer
Graham is just one of over 40,000 St John Ambulance volunteers
who give over five million hours of their time to help the public
with no thought of reward. But we rely on donations from the
general public to help recruit, train and equip these amazing
people.
Please, give what you can today and help us save another life.
Thank you.
