Training evenings

Members at training evening

The members at Bishopston get together most Mondays at our hall near Horfield Sports Centre. We have a varied programme of events and activities that include learning new skills or practicing existing ones such as first aid, or how to use the equipment on our ambulance (known as 'ambulance aid'). We also learn more specialist skills such as how to use a radio effectively.

Not all training evenings are spent inside the hall as we also go to different locations to try out our knowledge at mock incidents (called 'scenarios' ) where somebody pretends to be ill or injured. The other members bandage them up or treat them in some other way, safe in the knowledge that if they make a mistake, somebody’s health is not in danger.

The programme includes guest speakers who talk about a variety of topics, some related to medical maters, some purely for our enjoyment. All training evenings are meant to be fun, but some are less serious than others including an occasional quiz or barbeque. Some members even go to the pub afterwards.

We are always keen to welcome new volunteers from Bristol and surrounding areas. If you are interested, e-mail the Avon Recruitment Team saying you would like to join Bishopston St John Ambulance Division.

It can be fun learning how to do stuff that can actually save somebody’s life.
