Ambulance aid

Members with ambulance equipment

After you have gained some experience as a first aider you can consider whether you want to learn how to crew an ambulance. St John Ambulance actually needs more first aiders than ambulance crew, but as Bishopston has its own Crusader ambulance you have the choice. Most of the initial training is held centrally at out county headquarters in Bedminster, but we are able to practice using the ambulance equipment as part of our training evenings as we have our own ambulance and don’t have to rely on the central pool of ambulances at the county headquarters.

The first aiders are just as involved so that they are able to assist an ambulance crew if the need arises. It is much easier to help if you know what a particular bit of equipment looks like and roughly how it is used.

We are always keen to welcome new volunteers from Bristol and surrounding areas. If you are interested, e-mail the Avon Recruitment Team saying you would like to join Bishopston St John Ambulance Division.

It is good to at least know where everything is stored in the ambulance even if I am not actually qualified to use it.
