Volunteering in Avon

Adult volunteers from Avon

With over 1000 volunteers in Avon we are a thriving organisation.

Getting involved

Activities for our members are based around:

  • the major cities of Bristol and Bath;
  • the rural towns of North Somerset, North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

To maintain and develop our support to local communities we need:

  • members of all ages (Badgers 5-10, Cadets 11-18, Youth 16-25, Adult 18+);
  • leaders for both youth and adult sections;
  • support members with an interest in  administration, finance, outdoor activities, training and assessing.

Recruitment and induction of new members

  • We have a dedicated recruitment team that promote St John ambulance activities at most major events;
  • Having a large number of Divisions throughout the county, new members can 'try before they decide' to ensure the division they join is right for them;
  • A structured induction programme supports new recruits;
  • In Bath we have a 'youth unit' (16-25) - run by youth members for youth members.

Cost free volunteering

  • All essential training courses are free to members.
  • Members are reimbursed for their duty expenses.
  • Currently under discussion is 'cost free volunteering'.

Opportunities

We have:

  • First aid, care and ambulance competition teams who regularly compete (and win) at our National competition finals;
  • Cycle responder units to support first aid provision at large, congested duties.

We also support the local NHS Ambulance Trust by providing front line emergency ambulances and crews.

What do you get in return?

  • The satisfaction of supporting people in your local community;
  • Good quality training to prepare you for your chosen role;
  • Skills and knowledge that can be used to support/compliment educational courses or in the work place;
  • Lasting friendship;
  • Enjoyment.

Interested in joining?

We are always keen to welcome new members.  Email the Avon recruitment team. Remember, you don't have to wear a uniform and attend duties to volunteer, we also need support members

I Joined St John in 2005 and am now a Group Staff Officer for Cadets in Bristol. The experience, skills and qualifications from my occupation were accredited by St. John. I have made many new friends, acquired new skills and knowledge and am able to make a difference to members of my local community.
