Reading volunteer receives prestigious honour

Gill Rogers receiving her Order of St John

Gillian Rogers from Reading was invested as a member of the Order of St John at a special ceremony held in the historic Grand Priory Church.

Serving Sister

Mrs Rogers has been a volunteer for St John Ambulance for 14 years and was admitted as a Serving Sister. She was presented with the organisation's Insignia by the Prior of the Priory of England and the Islands, Sir Brian Jenkins. The special award was also approved by Her Majesty the Queen, who is Sovereign Head of the Order.

People found it odd that I was collecting the award as I'm not instantly recognisable as a St John Ambulance member. I don't wear a uniform as I am not a first aider and most of the work that I do is in the background

Gillian Rogers
Support Member

Gillian's role within St John Ambulance Berkshire is quite unusual as she is not a first aider like most St John volunteers, but an administration support member. She has been treasurer for her local division for many years and has also been involved in fundraising events for the charity.

On receiving her award Gill said: 'People found it odd that I was collecting the award as I'm not instantly recognisable as a St John Ambulance member. I don't wear a uniform as I am not a first aider and most of the work that I do is in the background. Awards are often given to the first aiders so it's nice that I've been recognised for the support work that I have done over the years.'

The investiture ceremonies take place four times a year. Many St John Ambulance volunteers are honoured, along with members of the emergency sevices who have made and outstanding contribution to the organisation.
