Bertie Badgers birthday
Young members of St John Ambulance,
Berkshire gathered on an unusually sunny day in June to celebrate
the 21st birthday of their mascot Bertie Badger. The
children travelled from locations across the county including
Newbury, Bracknell, Reading and Windsor.
Holyport Farm
The party was held on a farm in Holyport and was attended by
around 50 Badgers and a number of
Cadets who have progressed from being Badgers during
Bertie's Lifetime. The party goers were kept busy by taking part in
activities organised by adult members and youth leaders which
included learning circus skills, getting creative in the arts and
crafts tent and competing in a mini 'it's a knockout'
tournament.
We wish Bertie many more happy birthdays!
Erica Hodges
County Badger Leader, Berkshire
After lunch, Bertie received his presents to a
chorus of "Happy Birthday". Everyone who attended the party went
away exhausted but clutching a goodie bag and of course a slice of
Bertie's Birthday cake.
The event was organised by Erica Hodges and Charlotte Maddocks
who are in charge of all of the St John Badgers in Berkshire. Their
mammoth task included making a packed lunch and
wrapping presents for each child and helper.
They also arranged a celebration barn dance on the same
evening for adult members who have been involved in
Badgers and had assisted during the day.
Reflecting on the celebrations, Erica and Charlotte have both
agreed, 'The day was a huge success and everyone,
adults and children alike were worn out by the end
of it. We would like to thank the land owners for
allowing us to hold the party and everyone who
helped to make it run so smoothly. We wish Bertie many more happy
birthdays although hopefully someone else will be arranging his
40th!'
