Two Newbury & Thatcham Badgers

A pair of St John Ambulance members from Berkshire have made their organisation proud by finishing as runners up in a Southern counties first aid competition.

Newbury and Thatcham Badgers

Rebecca Chandler, aged eight and Lexi Davis aged nine are both members of the Newbury and Thatcham Sett and attended the competition which was held in Shaftsbury, Dorset where they competed against other St John Ambulance teams from Dorset, The Isle of Wight, Buckinghamshire and Hampshire.

Each team were presented with a scenario which included fake blood and a broken ankle which they were alerted to by a very loud scream from the injured actor.

Both Rebecca and Lexi have learned skills thay may actually save someone's life one day. They love going to Badgers.

Upon entering the room, Rebecca and Lexi had to assess the situation, remove any surrounding danger, treat the casualty and call for an ambulance. Their reactions were observed and marked along the way and the girls finished the competition with 114 points, just six points behind the winners.

Caroline Owen, Youth Leader for Newbury and Thatcham Badgers, who attended the competition with the girls said, 'They have done extremely well and I'm so proud of them. They deserve this recognition for their achievement and all the hard work they have out in.'

Mrs Lucy Chandler, mother of Rebecca also went along to watch her daughter and shares Caroline's view, 'We, of course, are very proud of both Rebecca and Lexi. They have learned skills with St John that may actually save someone's life one day. Rebecca has gained confidence in both dealing with unknown situations and in life generally, as well as about team-work. She loves going to Badgers.'
