Members of University of Essex LINKS had a night of success at the Annual Society Guild Awards hosted by the University of Essex Students' Union.

Most improved society

With a new format for the society awards, competition was set to be fierce for the three awards presented to societies. St John Ambulance LINKS was nominated for both the most improved society and the society of the year. Despite contesting against a much improved film society, LINKS was delighted to walk away with the trophy for most improved.

University of Essex LINKS has made much progress in the past year. The Societies Guild committee commented particularly on work made in communications - including a brand new website. Training for LINKS members has increased two-fold; and now LINKS volunteers can be found not just at events on campus twice a week, but around the county with other St John Ambulance units.

Individual success

In addition to the overall society awards, a number of commendations were awarded for exceptional work to societies at the University. St John Ambulance member Mark Aspin was one of the four commended.

In his four years as a member of University of Essex LINKS, Mark has held such diverse roles as web officer and secretary, and contributed over 1,500 hours of voluntary service to St John Ambulance; alongside commitment to other societies.

Outgoing unit chairman, Steven Morrison, commented on the evening's awards: "It was great to see the effort of our members recognised by the Students' Union. Over the past year the committe have put in alot of hard work to get the unit to the high standard that can be seen today. Without the hard work of Mark and others it would not have been possible.

"It is also important to recognise the hard work of all our volunteers, without whom the unit could not be effectively operational. I wish the new committe all the best for the upcoming year, they certainly have their work cut out!"
