Sporting challenge for University of Essex LINKS

LINKS members on duty

The University of Essex LINKS division of St John Ambulance provided extensive cover at a succession of sporting tournaments held at the university campus over two weekends.

University of Essex LINKS agreed to provide a substantial number of first aiders, along with two first aid posts, an ambulance and a four-wheel drive response vehicle.

For the second weekend, the unit was pleased to welcome the brand new command and control unit for the county, assisting with operational testing before the Southend Airshow. The unit boasts an electronic duty management system; CCTV equipment; a briefing area; and the essential brew making facilities!

New command and control vehicle for EssexJonathan Reed, County Radio Communications and Emergency Planning Officer, commented that the opportunity "Was useful to me as it highlighted a number of small glitches in the unit that needed to be sorted before the Southend Airshow."

Over the three days, St John Ambulance treated around 50 casualties, with more than half a dozen requiring transport to hospital via St John Ambulance vehicles. The most common ailments were minor cuts and sprains, however the recent dry weather caused a number of more significant injuries due to falling on the hard surface of the fields.

This event also showed how different units of St John Ambulance can work together.

Gareth Griffiths, unit leader for University of Essex LINKS, thanked these members, adding: "The members all seemed to have a good time enjoying the sun and proved their worth treating many casualties - several serious enough to warrant transportation to hospital.

"The events passed without any major problem and we look forward to working alongside the University in the future."
