New Tewkesbury unit New cadet unit for St John Ambulance
Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire’s leading first aid charity has launched its
latest Cadet Unit for young people aged under 18 this month.
The Tewkesbury Cadet
Unit will meet at the charity’s headquarters in
Link Road every Friday from
7pm to 8.30pm to learn life saving first aid as well as other
life skills.
It is the first time that the organisation has had a stand alone
unit for younger people in Tewkesbury – a previous group was part
of a larger adult group.
The Cadet Unit is for young people aged 10 to 17 and is the
newest addition to the charity's thriving youth arm in
Gloucestershire. There are currently 12 Cadet Units in the county
and 8 Badger Setts, for youngsters aged five to 10.
Younger Cadets learn first aid skills through St John
Ambulance’s bespoke training course for young people while older
Cadets can undertake a community first aid or first aid at work
course. Cadets can put their first aid and other communication
skills into practice by providing first aid to the public at events
or teaching first aid to other young people and adults.
St John Ambulance’s Gloucestershire Cadet of the Year
Harry Chalklin welcomed the opening of the new unit.
‘Our other units are very popular and we are constantly
struggling to keep up with demand but I hope that this will benefit
young people in the Tewkesbury area.
‘In the time I’ve been involved with St John Ambulance I have
learnt so much. As well as learning the skills that could
be the difference between a life lost and a life saved, I
made new friends, learnt how to work on my own and as part of a
team and feel that I’ve put something back into my local
community.
‘You’re never too young to learn first aid –
nearly two thirds of people wouldn’t know what to do in a medical
emergency so young people can be the
difference.’
