The City and Guilds students will be working on the old Leyland Daf over the next academic year and will hand it back to the charity next summer.

This is a fantastic opportunity for us to get one of our vehicles back on the road. It’s also a great chance for these young students to get their hands dirty and learn the mechanics of a large vehicle.

They will be stripping down and repairing the ambulance as part of their course in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. St John will only have to pay for parts, new oxygen piping, reflective stripes and a new siren.

Richard Curtis, a divisional officer for St John in Southampton, said: 'This is a fantastic opportunity for us to get one of our vehicles back on the road. It’s also a great chance for these young students to get their hands dirty and learn the mechanics of a large vehicle.'

He added: 'Everyone is a winner in this exciting and novel project involving both the charitable and education sectors.'

Course lecturer Shane Charles was delighted that his students can learn maintenance on the old Ambulance. 'I was looking for something more challenging for them – this has got all the mechanical work we need to do.'

The students have all completed their City and Guilds Level 1 and are just embarking on Level 2.
