About us

Our volunteers support the local community in so many ways

We believe that those who need it should receive first aid from those around them and that nobody should suffer for the lack of trained first aiders.

That's why you trust us to train and advise you, provide first aid and medical support at your events and why you help us to continue our charitable work.

Local

St John Ambulance in Bishop's Stortford was first formed in May 1933 and ever since has worked for, with and in the community to keep people safe. You'll find our volunteers at local and national events throughout the year, providing you with first aid, medical and ambulance support.

I was extremely impressed with the quality of the service you and your team provided and look forward to working with your organisation again in the future.

Specialist Social Worker, Bishop's Stortford

Here in Bishop's Stortford, we have a team of over 25 adult volunteers including first aiders, nurses and paramedics who provide support throughout the community.

This year alone, our volunteers have been at events ranging from carnivals, firework events, school fetes, sporting events, motor racing, concerts, charity fundraising events and motor shows.

During 2007, our volunteers have travelled the country from Cornwall to Humberside providing first aid at events. We were on standby to help at the 2007 flooding, which affected many parts of the UK, and locally we provided support to many functions including sporting, social and community events.

Young

Cadets, for 10 to 18 year olds, were founded locally in 2001 and provide young people with many opportunities. Whilst undertaking the Grand Prior Award, the highest award a Cadet can obtain, subjects such as lifestyle, personal development, community and creativity partner alongside first aid to develop young people further. Cadets can opt to attend weekend courses in leadership and also have the opportunity to attend annual camps.

Our latest addition to the St John Ambulance family during 2007 was Badgers.  Our Badger members are aged between five and 10 and meet weekly to learn new skills such as first aid and environment awareness, make friends and become better citizens.  Badgers also have the opportunity to undertake other activities such as annual camps and day trips.

Foundations

The Bishop's Stortford unit has long been involved in the communities of Bishop's Stortford and Sawbridgeworth, providing first aid training, care, ambulance support and public event cover.

Our volunteers give up their time to be able to provide vital services to the community and without their input many events simply wouldn't take place.

Today, our volunteers play an important part in your community and therefore in your life too.  Whether you've had first hand experiences of being treated by one of our volunteers, or you've been trained by our team, you can be sure that we're always here to help.

Modern

All of our volunteers are trained in the latest first aid and ambulance skills fit for their role and have the help of an array of equipment and vehicles to support them in their work.

Our volunteers are supported locally by a team of registered healthcare professionals. Volunteers within Bishop's Stortford include nurses and paramedics who can give advice and provide further training to volunteers.

Whilst we are always known for our first aid background, St John Ambulance has a whole host of other services and activities that you might not know existed!
