First aider

Members practicing first aid

St John Ambulance believes that everyone who needs it should receive first aid from those around them and that no one should suffer for the lack of trained first aiders.

St John Ambulance first aiders are trained to deal with any situation which may arise, from heart attacks to headaches and strokes to stings.

Why?

The skills that our first aiders learn are put to regular use at local and national public events. Our volunteers often arrange further medical assistance and transport for our patients, or provide comfort and rest areas to people in need of more prolonged care.

But their skills aren't just valuable to St John Ambulance and the wider community. Our volunteers sometimes have to call upon their first aid skills at home, in the workplace or whilst out and about, making them someone special wherever they are.

What?

It's not just a case of see it, try it, do it!  Our volunteers here in Bishop's Stortford are encouraged to attend a four day first aid at work course which will prepare them for a vast array of conditions, scenarios and treatments.

After this course, we hold regular weekly meetings where volunteers are taught additional skills and encouraged to use and develop their skills as a team.  We run regular scenarios to help simulate accidents and illnesses so that our volunteers can practise.

Commitment

St John Ambulance appreciates that our volunteers have families, work commitments, social lives and other activities that they are involved in.  All we ask is that volunteers can offer at least a few hours each month to train and provide services within the community.

Finding out more

We welcome new volunteers to attend our weekly meetings to find out more about what St John Ambulance has to offer.

To find out more, email us or call us on 07890 726299 or complete the online volunteering form and one of our recruitment co-ordinators will make contact with you.

The greatest incentive for me to join St John Ambulance was knowing that the skills and knowledge could ultimately help me save a life.
