Emma Howells - County Cadet of the year 2011
Emma Howells,16, from St Albans division,
looks back over her time as Hertfordshire's Cadet of the Year
2011.
How did you feel about being
announced as Cadet of the Year 2011?
I was incredibly surprised to be made Cadet of the Year, as I
hadn’t attended the competition in order to win it. However, I
consider it a real honour to represent my county.
What does the role involve and what kind of events have
you attended?
I have visited various Cadet units
around Hertfordshire to attend their presentation evenings. I also
represent Hertfordshire youth at national events such as St John
Day at St Paul’s cathedral, and the young achievers ceremony at
Buckingham palace, where I met the Princess Royal.
What has been your highlight?
Definitely attending national events where I was able to meet
cadets from across the country, and become good friends with them.
My favourite moment from one of these events was the themed dinner
and disco at the National Cadet of the Year competition, which was
held in Swindon. The theme was "circus" and I dressed as a lion
tamer, which was an outfit that blended in rather more than some of
the neon clown suits!
What are your favourite kind of first aid duties to
attend?
My favourite duty is Remembrance Day as not
only do the cadets get a chance to treat casualties, but they also
have the opportunity to march in their local parade and represent
their unit.
How has being Cadet of the Year helped
you?
When I was first made Cadet of the year I was extremely shy and
quiet. However, I have built up my confidence, becoming a far more
social, out-going person.
What are your aspirations for the future?
I
am currently studying A-Level History, English, Classics and
Geography. Although I am not sure what I wish to do as a future
career, I would like to go on to study History at university, as I
am passionate about the subject.
Why would you encourage someone else to join St John
Ambulance Cadets?
I would encourage anyone to join St
John Ambulance due to the fantastic community spirit
surrounding the organisation. Everyone is welcomed with open arms
and there is something to interest everybody, from first aid, to
competitions, to the county youth camp.
