Life savers join forces for reality training exercise
Members of St John Ambulance
Medway put their first aid expertise to the test at the
end of October when they took part in a vehicle extrication
training exercise in conjunction with Kent
Fire and Rescue Service.
The training scenario, which took place at
Medway’s divisional headquarters, involved a pedestrian being hit
by an oncoming car. The scene was initially attended by a team of
first aiders who cared for the injured parties whilst awaiting the
arrival of two St John Ambulance vehicles and the Kent Fire and
Rescue Service.
Exercise provides valuable training experience
St John Ambulance crew were required to treat the
injured pedestrian and closely monitor the condition of the
driver whilst Kent Fire and Rescue Service secured the
vehicle and cut off sections of the car using specialised hydraulic
rescue equipment.
Once the roof of the vehicle was removed, the ambulance
crew were able to safely remove the patient using spinal
boards and extrication splints.
Amy Jung, divisional officer at SJA Medway who
organised the training exercise said: ‘We would like to thank the
Kent Fire and Rescue Service for taking part in our training
exercise and giving our members the opportunity to
experience a realistic car accident scenario.’
