Spectacular start to a special week

Special Olympics Opening Ceremony

The Special Olympics got off to a spectacular start at the opening ceremony last weekend at Leicester's Walkers Stadium.

St John Ambulance combined forces with the British Red Cross in Leicestershire and Rutland, and provided 41 volunteer first aiders for the ceremony.

St John Ambulance Leicestershire and Rutland Assistant Commissioner, Member Support and Duty Officer for the opening ceremony, Pauline Scoley said: 'It was a spectacular start to what should be an amazing week, certainly something that we will remember for years to come.'

The Special Olympics now spreads from the Walkers Stadium to sites around the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland, and St John Ambulance volunteers will have a major presence at these events.

The charity won't just be providing first aid volunteers, but will also be providing ambulance crews and volunteers to work in the event control room - working with staff from other agencies, ensuring smooth running of the event.

As if this wasn't enough, St John Ambulance volunteers can also be found at the British Moto GP at Donington Park which is now well underway.
