Volunteers kept busy during Wimbledon
First aiders from St John Ambulance
London (Prince of Wales's) District have been busy at Wimbledon,
with hundreds of people treated so far during the
Championships.
Many incidents related to the high temperatures
Around 50 volunteers have been at the tournament each day,
making sure they are able to be the difference by providing first
aid treatment to everyone who needs it.
At the start of the second week (Monday 27 July), London
experienced the hottest weather of the year so far, with
temperatures passing 30 degrees. Over the course of the day,
247 people needed first aid treatment and one was taken to
hospital.
This compared to 81 people treated the following day when the
weather was cooler with some heavy showers.
Ann Cable, Commissioner of St John Ambulance London (Prince of
Wales's) District, said: 'It would be sensible to assume, given the
high temperatures, many of these recorded incidents were indeed
related to heat.'
St John Ambulance has a long-standing relationship with the
organisers of Wimbledon and since 1988, the charity has treated
more than 335,000 people at the event.
