Working with schools

School children practice first aid skills

Through our work with schools in Northumbria we train over 10,000 children in first aid each year, supporting our vision that everyone who needs it should receive first aid from those around them. No one should suffer from a lack of trained first aiders.

Accident prevention

Young people are an ideal target audience since over one third of all pedestrian road traffic accidents, half of all drownings and burns happen to young people aged 0 to 14.  We aim to teach prevention as well as treatment.

Our Northumbria schools work falls into three main categories:

We are a major partner with Safety Works interactive centre in Newcastle, teaching accident prevention and first aid in cooperation with Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Northumbria Police and other partners.

Working with Sunderland Teaching Primary Care Trust (PCT) we support accident and injury prevention strategies by providing first aid teaching in hospitals and walk in centres, reducing children's fears.  This work is then followed up by visits to schools.

We visit schools directly to provide much needed first aid training to year six, eight and 10 groups, offering initial and subsequent refresher and extended training for young people.
