Newark's current building
The present headquarters were donated to
St. John in 1951 by the George Reid Memorial Fund, which was
established by Mr Reid during his tenure as the Divisional
Superintendent. The building itself is a World War II Nissen
Hit which has deteriorated badly over the years
which has led to problems with maintainence and upkeep.
The building is also too small for Newark St
John Ambulance's current training needs and does not
meet up to date requirements for providing suitable
facilities for disabled people. In addition, the nature of
its construction means that the necessary repairs would
be too costly to carry out in a building with limited scope for
the future.
Moving forward
St John Ambulance received the keys
for the new premises on 22 December 2006. The new
premise, situated within a mile of the town centre on the Brunel
Drive Industrial Estate, offer 7,000 square feet of office,
training, meeting and garage space and ample on site parking.
Internal alterations are needed to provide
additional training rooms and storage facilities inside but we
hope that we will be able to be operational in the new
building in the third quarter of 2007. In the meantime, we are
still continuing our fund-raising
efforts to ensure that the full costs of acquiring and
adapting the building can be met on target.
