Young Carers have a great day out
St John Ambulance, in association with
Somerset County Council and Somerset Partnership, ran their seventh
'respite and learning' day for young carers from across Somerset at
the Roller Coaster Youth Club in Parkway, Bridgwater on 22
February.
Somerset County Council work with 400 young
carers across the county. These are exceptional
individuals that look after disabled or ill parents while going to
school. This results in them having very little free time to
themselves
'These 22 young children, aged 8 – 15, really do have a tough
life and it is a pleasure to be able to give them 'me-time' as well
as teach them useful things that will help them in their caring
role,' said Emily Lang of St John Ambulance Somerset.
The day out covered Accident prevention,
Cleanliness and hygiene, Infection
control and Basic first aid. The young
carers also participated in fun quizzes and art therapy.
'It is so good to see them playing together and having fun away
from their daily chores,' said Lang.
This is the seventh such programme run by St John
Ambulance and it is hoped there will be more in the future.
