Meetings
We meet most weeks to train in first aid,
ambulance skills or for social evenings. We meet on
Tuesday evenings from 7.30 - 9.30pm at our HQ in
Victoria Street, Wellington TA21 8HR.
Training
We always aim to make all our training as practical and
fun as possible. As first aid is a very practical skill
most of the training is hands on practice with shorter theory
elements. In addition to the training that we do at our
headquarters we also have field exercises
where we do outdoor practice in real life
environments.
As we generally work in teams at events we also do much of our
training working together in groups. Members also act as casualties
during training to experience the scenario from the patient's point
of view, this helps us explain what we're doing
and relate to patients
There is a large range of courses and skills that members can
develop if they choose. All members train in basic first aid and
safe handling principals. Members can then choose to train
in additional subjects, these include:
- Medical gases
- AED (defibrillator)
- Airway maintenance
- Patient handling skills
- Radio communications
- Patient care and communication
- Fracture immobilisation
- Emergency response and transport
- Ambulance driving
All members are fully supported to achieve the
skills and qualifications that they want, but are welcome to train
at whatever level they feel comfortable with.
We also have nurses, paramedics and doctors within Somerset
who help train specialist subjects.
