Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Are you part of NHS? Do you respond to 999 calls?
As an independent charity, we are not part of the NHS, but we do assist the statutory ambulance service. For example, in times of crisis, our volunteers will respond to 999 calls to help the NHS crew to work at the scene of a major incident.

  2. Where does your money come from?
We rely on donations from members of the public, companies and trusts, to continue our charitable work. We do carry out some commercial activities, such as our first aid training courses for the workplace, which supports our charitable work.

  3. Do volunteers have to wear a uniform?
Volunteers wear a uniform if it is necessary for the activities they are doing. For example, first aiders on duty wear a uniform so they can be easily identified in an emergency.

  4. Do you operate in other countries?
Yes. Worldwide, St John Ambulance has over 200,000 members. Through the STAPLE Programme our county is helping St John Tanzania with first aid training and equipment, helping them expand and develop as part of our worldwide family.
