Local shopping centre backs St John Ambulance campaign
St John Ambulance in
Staffordshire has held first aid demonstrations at Stafford’s
Asda store on 7 and 8 May.
Members of the public were invited to
come along to view first aid demonstrations and find out more about
the work of St John Ambulance.
Stoke’s Freeport Talke outlet shopping centre
has supported St John Ambulance for the past couple of years after
initially instigating a ‘first aid week’ to create interest and
support the community. Last year saw a week of activity to promote
Community first aid courses at the centre and it was there that
centre worker Jo Henshall undertook a ‘family first aid’
course.
So when, shortly after completing the course,
Jo’s two-year-old son Matthew became ill with a fever in the early
hours of the morning she felt well prepared to deal with the
situation. ‘When you are faced with a young child with a raging
temperature it causes a lot of worry and panic. As well as
equipping you with vital first aid skills, the St John Ambulance
course teaches you how to keep calm and deal with the situation. I
am really thankful to have done the St John Ambulance training,’ Jo
said.
The centre security staff are all trained by
St John Ambulance. Security staff supervisor Karen Giblin said:
We have had to deal with all kinds of incidents at the centre including a couple who fell on the escalator, a child who fell on the steps and cut his head, and people who have fallen. The first aid training really helps make a difference to the people in the centre.
