Working with schools

schools

St John Ambulance in Staffordshire is committed to training young people in first aid.

We work closely with teachers, youth leaders, schools, Pupil Referral Units, Local Education Authority and Partnership groups.

We can provide training for all young people from 7 to 18 years old which can be delivered by one of our trainers, a school teacher, higher level teaching assistant or youth leader within a recognised youth organisation - all with relevant first aid knowledge.

Our young first aider pack is an interactive, pupil-centred resource to support this.

The government's agenda is now placing children's wellbeing at the heart of their education campaign. Training pupils in first aid isn't just about learning a life saving skill, but it can also boost self-esteem, encourage team work and communication, and provide an opportunity for children to engage with voluntary work in their local community.

First aid can be incorporated into many areas of the key stage 2, 3 and 4 curriculum, including:

  • PE
  • Science
  • PSHE
  • Citizenship

Britannia Building Society Foundation

In 2009 the Britannia Building Society Foundation with Staffordshire Partnership provided St John Ambulance Staffordshire with funds to train school children across the county. This project was a great success with many schools choosing St John Ambulance as their first aid provider. As a result more than 1000 pupils across the county benefited from young first aid training.

Tanzania

In June 2010 one of our volunteers, Andrey Davis, travelled to Tanzania to train a number of schools in first aid. Whilst there, Andrey was also able to provide additional training to various commercial sectors such as Tanzania City Delivery Services, Tanzanian Brewery and many more.

The time spent in Tanzania also enabled us to:

  • Donate a projector
  • Provide St John Ambulance shirts to trainers
  • Provide school materials
  • Update their training methods
  • Help to establish school and commercials programmes

There is much more that needs to be done. Hence we are always looking for donations and support to help St John Ambulance Tanzania become a more active organisation in Africa.
