Multi agency seasonal support
St John Ambulance volunteers worked
tirelessly on the night of 17 December alongside
the West Midlands Ambulance Service and British Red Cross at a
Temporary Minor Injury Units (TMIU) in Birmingham.
The role of the unit was to provide
treatment to patients with minor illness and minor
medical conditions and to avert long waits in hospital accident and
emergency departments.
To ensure that revellers were kept safe
throughout the extreme weather conditions of Friday night before
Christmas:
The team did a fantastic job throughout ensuring that strain on the Accident and Emergency departments was kept down.

- 12 St John Ambulance volunteers
worked shifts 10 hours long
- Shifts began at seven in the evening and
ended at at five o clock the next morning
- A total of 16 patients were treated at the
TMIU’s in Birmingham
- Over 40 emergency calls being attended to by
the multi-agencies.
St John Ambulance Commissioner Operations for
the West Midlands, Paul Bytheway, said that the team did a
fantastic job and ensured that strain on the Accident and Emergency
departments was kept down.
'The TMIU's are always a fantastic success and
our volunteers really put their community first donating their time
to work alongside paramedics to ensure that revellers are kept safe
during the holiday period.'
Due to it's success the three agencies are
preparing to set a unit up for New Years
Eve.
