Wolverhampton volunteer honoured with MBE
A dedicated St John Ambulance volunteer
from Wolverhampton received an MBE in the New Year's Honours List
2012.
58 years of service
Maureen Watkin, Sector Staff Operations Officer
for the Wolverhampton area of St John Ambulance, was recently
honoured with an MBE for the service that she has given the
organisation since she joined in 1953.
Having joined the organisation as a
cadet, Maureen has helped countless people within the local
community, putting her first aid
skills into practice at hundreds of public events;
and on average she completes approximately 1000
hours of voluntary work for St John Ambulance every
year.
Maureen says, ‘I joined because my father
was a member of the organisation and I have stayed because I enjoy
attending public duties, the company of the people
that I volunteer alongside, and everything that St John
Ambulance stands for.’
Senior roles
Alongside her first aid duties, Maureen
has also played an integral part in moving
the organisation forward, holding a variety of senior
posts during her time as a volunteer.
Her current role sees her
co-ordinate the other volunteers
within Wolverhampton in order to ensure that there are
first aiders present at all local
community events that require our service.
St John Ambulance has over 1000 adult volunteers in the West
Midlands, who provide first aid service at events throughout the
year, ensuring that no-one has to suffer needlessly because of a
lack of trained first aiders.
