Wyeside Badgers national triumph
Three youngsters from Herefordshire did
St John Ambulance in the West Midlands proud with their recent
triumph at the National Badgers competition.
National Badgers competition
The annual competition took place on 29 October in Swindon, and
saw Wyeside Badger sett beat ten other Badger setts to
first place.
Badgers, the St John Ambulance term for our members aged
between five and ten, Charlotte Godsall,
Catherine Sheridan and Sophie Jinks, successfully
completed two tough tasks in order to be crowned the
winners.
The first part was a first aid scenario in which they were
expected to remove danger, find out what had happened, treat the
casualty with the appropriate first aid and make an effective
telephone call to summon an ambulance – all in less than six
minutes.
The second part of the competition was a test on a Badger
topic.
At their weekly meetings, badgers work towards a variety of
badges in topics such as ‘Wild Badger’ or ‘Caring Badger’.
Youth opportunities
St John Ambulance has youth opportunities for children from
aged five right up until 18 across the West Midlands.
Youth Development Officer Chris Scrivens, said:
‘St John Ambulance Badgers and Cadets allows young people a chance
to have fun, make new friends, help others and learn new things.
With all the negative news about young people we’re glad to be
giving them somewhere to go for happy times and to take part in
activities ranging from learning about first aid to trying new
foods.’
