Chest pains - resources and lesson plans

Chest pains can be a symptom of a number of conditons, such as a heart attack, angina, or trauma. A heart attack or an angina attack is caused by problems in blood circulation.

Lesson overview – chest pains

This lesson is designed to help students understand the risks relating to chest pains. Students will learn what signs and symptoms to look for when it comes to angina and heart attacks, and what to do if someone is having an angina or heart attack.

The lesson plan includes different suggested activities to help students learn about heart attacks and angina. By the end of the lesson, students will:

  • • understand the difference between angina and a heart attack
  • • understand the signs and symptoms of an angina or heart attack
  • • know what to do if someone is suffering from an angina or heart attack
  • • understand the effects of diet and exercise on the heart
  • • know key terminology related to the heart
  • • know how and when to use an AED (automated external defibrillator).
