Donating shares and securities

Do you have any shares that are uneconomical to sell? Have you received windfall shares which you would like to donate, or are you simply looking for a tax-efficient way of giving to charity? Why not donate your shares to St John Ambulance.

Since April 2000 companies are able to get corporation tax relief for gifts of certain shares and securities to charity. Companies can get this relief in addition to relief from corporation tax on capital gains on gifts to charity of shares, securities and other assets.

Donating your shares to St John Ambulance will help us to save lives - you will also gain financially from your donation!

Giving shares to St John Ambulance means you can claim back tax relief in full against the value of those shares and any associated costs such as brokers' fees.

For example if you donate £1,000 worth of shares to St John Ambulance and you are a higher rate taxpayer, you will pay £400 less in income tax that year.

Additionally, you will not have to pay any capital gains tax on any increase in the value of the shares since you bought them
