Work experience essentials: a health and safety guide for young
people
St John Ambulance has produced this
resource for teachers to deliver to students aged 14-18 about to
embark on work placements.
The resource contains three lesson
plans which cover a background in health and safety; risk
assessment and first day of work experience.
Alongside this there are fact
sheets which can be interspersed with the lesson plans to
enrich the subject topics covering five important areas of health
and safety: lifting and moving objects, slips, trips and falls,
working with hazardous substances, machinery noises and
vibrations, working with display screen equipment. Furthermore
there are scenarios; teachers’ sheets and an image bank to all help
support the delivery and learning.
We believe it is of great importance that
students are properly prepared to deal with
potential hazards that might arise in the work place and to also
ensure they are aware of their rights and responsibilities upon
entering work to ensure they are best placed to get the most out of
it as possible.
It is for these reasons we have produced this
resource for free which we hope you are able to
make good use of. Please email us at training@nhq.sja.org.uk with
any comments or suggestions you have of the resource and
improvements which you feel could be made.
