University students volunteering with St John Ambulance

Across the country, there are dedicated
groups of higher education students in St John Ambulance known as
LINKS.
Historically, the name 'LINKS' dates back to when it was a
link between the St John Ambulance pre-university groups
and the post university groups.
Today, 90% of students in LINKS joined upon arriving at
university. LINKS units are particularly popular as they are
affiliated with their students' unions and offer a
great opportunity to perfect the work-life balance of studying hard
and enjoying the time spent at university.
As a student in St John Ambulance, there are many opportunities
available to you such as first aid, socialising, training and
volunteering:
First aid
LINKS units provide first aid cover for their universities and
the wider community. There is the potential to save a life or
help look after an injured member of the public in an extremely
rewarding service to the community.
Socialising
LINKS units meet regularly during term time and often out of
term time. They will have regular social events to meet all
tastes. This provides a great opportunity to meet new
people both within the organisation and outside
it. As most students at university live away from home, LINKS
offers a varied social life with members soon
feeling part of the family. Many units often have annual
balls and teambuilding weekends that allow members to relax and
forget about their studies for a few days.
Training
LINKS units will train regularly, normally once a week during
term time. Such sessions will teach members new
skills and help them to develop their first aid. The
more experienced members have the opportunity to teach the newer
members and get the reward of helping them in their development
within the organisation.
Volunteering
LINKS units offer many opportunities to
volunteer in your local community. Whether this is through
providing first aid services, training in first aid or youth work -
there is something for everyone. We have an
extremely vibrant youth section with many opportunities to work
with young people of all age ranges. LINKS groups are totally
student run, so there are opportunities for members to take leading
roles in the management of the group. There are plentiful
opportunities to enhance your CV and you will enjoy doing so!
Every student will have been told that university is more than a
degree, it's an education. LINKS allows for this with members
choosing how much time they want to give and how / when they want
to spend this time.
