Unit Manager (Alton Badgers)
Here at St John Ambulance, we believe that nobody should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the community, committing their time to ensure that those who need it receive first aid from those around them.
You may have seen our volunteers at one of thousands of events across the country each year, or been on one of our first aid courses. But did you know that we start training our lifesavers from the age of 7 years? Our Badger (7 to 10 years) and Cadets (10 to 18 years) groups exist to ensure that our young people know even the most basic of first aid skills, whilst balancing this with a well-rounded educational programme to enrich their life skills.
Badgers follow the Super Badger programme, which sees them undertake a series of subjects at their weekly meetings which count towards their Super Badger Award. These range from Adventure Badger to Entertain Badger and Eco Badger to Safety Badger. Above all, our Badger Units offer a safe, fun environment for people to learn in.
We’re looking to expand our Badger Units with the addition of a new unit in Petersfield from January 2017. In order to adequately prepare for this, we’re looking for dedicated leaders and helpers to support the vital work we do in developing our young people. We’re recruiting now for the position of Unit Manager – the volunteer who will oversee the activities in the unit and deliver a fun, interactive programme for our young people.
Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before! You’ll be in the same boat as so many of our current youth leaders when they started. With training and ongoing support at every step of the way, they’ve grown some of our newest units into the very best they can be and we’re confident you can do the same too!
This role requires a volunteering commitment of around 6 hours per week, with occasional weekend requirements for training courses and additional youth activities. Because this will be a new launch unit, the weekly meeting night is yet to be decided on where all the magic happens for our young people, and therefore there is some flexibility for the successful applicant.
For more information on this vacancy and the role, please contact Jenny Quibell, Volunteer Area Manager on 07771 934367 or via Jennifer.Quibell@sja.org.uk. If you’d like to find out more about our Youth Programmes David Lygo, Volunteer District Youth Officer can be contacted on 07826 923682 or via David.Lygo@sja.org.uk
The deadline for application is 12 April 2017.
We look forward to welcoming you on the first step towards being the difference; not only to so many young people but also between life and death.
