Jason Loughran

Knowing what he wanted to do with his
life from a young age, Jason Loughran joined St John Ambulance at
the age of 13. 'I wanted to work in a Health care environment in
the future,' he said. Believing that through St John he would
develop the skills and experience
that would help him achieve his goal.
Thirteen years later Jason is a registered
nurse with the NHS and a volunteer trainer with St John Ambulance
where he passes on his life saving skills to all
ages. He is also a Senior Country Staff Officer (youth) in
Leicestershire and Rutland.
I really felt I was in a position to pay back the skills I had gained from St John Ambulance and later used in my Nurse training and life in general.

The early years
First joining as a Cadet, Jason remembers the opportunities that
being a Youth member gave him such as camps, Grand Prior subjects
and an Award reception at Buckingham Palace. 'These are all
experiences that I would never have gained without St John
Ambulance,' he said.
During his time as a Cadet, Jason took advantage of the
Cadet Leadership and Training courses which
enabled him to assist his regional Officer in running the Cadet
division he was a part of. From there Jason naturally progressed
into a volunteer with the Adult division, staying active through
his Nurse training and eventually progressing to the role of
Divisional Cadet Officer and Divisional Nurse.
'I really felt I was in a position to pay back the skills I had
gained from St John Ambulance and later used in my Nurse training
and life in general,' he said. 'Now, I use my training and
experience to lead others and support Cadets in their own learning
and development.'
Jason today
Now 27, Jason says he still has so many reasons to stay with St
John Ambulance. These reasons range from teaching life
saving skills, communication skills or personal skills;
finding support for his professional career with the NHS; treating
everything from minor injuries to major trauma
cases; and meeting new friends.
'Working with young people is still my main role within St John
Ambulance, and it's where I gain most of my enjoyment,' he said. 'I
can definitely say that it's my passion to see
young people develop and achieve and I'm privileged to be part of
that process.'
Working one-on-one with Cadets and in groups, Jason is able to
teach practical skills and foster the youths self confidence in
their abilities. A role he finds deeply satisfying.
'The best part about working with Cadets is not having
to grow up,' said Jason. 'At 27 I still get to go to Youth
Camp, learn to ski, try archery, attend the Youth Ball, visit
museums and so many other events across the country.'
Famous last words
'Volunteering with St John Ambulance is special,' he said. 'As
an organization it can offer so many opportunities in so many
different areas, and you really do get a lot in return.'
'I can't see myself not being a member as I'll always be able to
give something in return for all I have gained.'
