London to Brighton bike ride
Three St John Ambulance counties pull together to provide the
medical cover for the annual London to Brighton bike ride. The
volunteers cover the 60-mile ride which starts at Clapham Common in
south London, passes through Surrey and finishes on the Brighton
seafront.
It is one of the nation's largest mass participation sporting
events with nearly 30,000 official participants and it takes 500 St
John Ambulance volunteers to cover the event.
It is also a large scale communications exercise as St John
Ambulance provide communications links along the length of the
course through radio and telephone links.
This means that if a competitor did have an accident and had to
go to hospital for an X-ray, for example, then their friends and
relatives at the finish line could be kept informed.
Please note: the london to brighton bike ride is organised
by the British Heart Foundation - please
see their website for information about entry.
