First aid manual wins award

Dr Margaret Austin collects BMA award

The First Aid Manual has scooped the Chairman's Special Award at the prestigious British Medical Association (BMA) Medical Book Competition awards ceremony, held in London earlier this month.

The First Aid Manual, produced by St John Ambulance in partnership with the British Red Cross and St. Andrew's Ambulance Association, was one of around 600 submissions to the competition, which aims to encourage and reward excellence in medical publishing. The manual is published by Dorling Kindersley.

Dr Margaret Austin, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at St John Ambulance, and chairman of the Tripartite Medical Committee which wrote the manual, accepted the award from Sir Kenneth Calman, chair of the BMA Board of Science.

She said: 'The manual is one of the key ways in which we seek to spread knowledge and expertise in first aid. We work very hard to make sure that the material is comprehensive but accessible, so we're thrilled that this work has been recognised by the BMA.'
