St John Ambulance supports record number of events as nation marks Diamond Jubilee

London District are busy preparing for the upcoming Jubilee celebrations

St John Ambulance first aiders are supporting an ‘unprecedented number’ of events this weekend as the nation celebrates Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with events ranging from street parties, fun days and festivals to the Thames flotilla.

Jubilee fever

The nation’s leading first aid charity is in a unique position to gauge the level of celebrations over the long weekend, with support being provided to over 700 Jubilee-themed events, from local street fairs and parties to national events like the State Procession and river pageant. This is in addition to non-Jubilee commitments like the Olympic Torch Relay and gigs such as Coldplay at the Emirates.

Chris Reed, Head of Volunteering at St John Ambulance, said: ‘This weekend our volunteers will be providing first aid support up and down the country at an unprecedented number of events. Jubilee fever has caught hold of the nation and inspired all kinds of community celebrations.

‘Over the four days we’ll be providing first aid to those who need it at over 700 Jubilee events which is something of a record for us. We are delighted and proud to be involved in the celebrations and our trained volunteers will be on hand to make sure it is memorable for all the right reasons.’

Providing support ambulance service

In addition, the organisation’s personnel are providing extensive back up to NHS ambulance service trusts across the nation as a precautionary measure to strengthen their core fleet in responding to 999 calls during the expected peak in demand for their services. The fully trained and equipped crews will be available to ambulance services around the country for immediate deployment and in turn help to be the difference between a life saved and a life lost.

Events supported include:

  • The Jubilee Family Festival in Hyde Park on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 Jun
  • The Jubilee River Pageant on Sunday 3 Jun
  • Big Lunch events nationwide on Sunday 3 June
  • The BBC Jubilee Concert in The Mall on Monday 4 June
  • The state procession and service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral on Tuesday 5 June
  • Knaresborough Castle celebrations on Sunday 3 June
  • Reading Carnival on Monday 4 June
  • Plus an attempt by Morecambe residents on Sunday 3 June to break the Guinness World Record for the longest table at a street party.

These are just some of the events where St John Ambulance will be providing first aid and are poised to be the difference between life and death when needed.
