Wilting at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show and Hyde Park concerts

Last weekend saw the hot weather continue at some of the summers biggest outdoor events, including the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show and Hyde Park concerts. St John Ambulance volunteers were on hand at these events to provide essential first aid to those who needed it.

At the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show, a team of 35 first aiders, nurses and doctors were ready to be the difference for any of the crowd of 20,000 people that attended each day. In total, first aiders treated over 550 people of which eight were taken to hospital, for a variety of injuries and illnesses, including sunburn, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

This year, the Hyde Park concerts hosted some of the biggest names in music and also included a programme of free activities such as dance workshops, magicians and fairground rides. Throughout the week, volunteers provided first aid to over 1,100 people.

With the hot weather set to continue, don't forget to take a few simple steps to stay safe in the heat this summer:

Protect yourself from the sun - it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the event and neglect the risk from sunburn and sunstroke. Cover yourself up and use a good sunblock.

Stay hydrated - if the weather is hot, ensure you have water with you at all times and remember that queues for parking or site entry may be long at peak times.

Wear a hat - this will provide extra protection against the sun.
