Adult choking - resources and lesson plans

Choking occurs when someone’s airway is either fully or partly blocked. They may lose consciousness if the blockage is not cleared.

This first aid module teaches students how to recognise when someone is choking, and what to do when someone is choking.

Lesson overview – choking (adults)

In this first aid lesson, students will learn:

  • • how to recognise when someone is choking
  • • how to clear an airway using back slaps and abdominal thrusts.

The lesson plan includes suggested activities and key vocabulary about choking.
