Currently a quarter of adults in the UK are already overweight and by 2050, it is predicted that 50% of population could be clinically obese*, meaning the need for bariatric ambulances is becoming increasingly important.

St John Ambulance has been undertaking specialist bariatric patient transportation since 2002. In 2004 St John Ambulance built and commissioned the first CEN compliant vehicle capable of safely transporting clients up to 444Kg/71 stone in weight.

Our bariatric vehicles are designed to provide a safe and dignified transport solution to those whose weight, or condition, requires specialist transport.

What we can offer

  • •Specially designed, fully-equipped vehicles with features such as extra wide ramps
  • •Experienced crews, all trained in manual handling, to ETA (EMT) level and qualified blue light drivers
  • •A service that ensures patient comfort, dignity and respect is maintained at all times.

Trusted and dignified service

We provide a seamless 24/7 bariatric service to the East of England Ambulance Trust, covering 7,500 square miles with 3 dedicated vehicles. By commissioning St John Ambulance to cover its bariatric calls the ambulance service are able to deploy its resources to its higher priority calls.
