Young first aiders awarded

Fourteen inspirational young people have been honoured for their quick thinking and use of first aid at St John Ambulance’s Young First Aider of the Year Awards.

Award ceremony

On 12 May, the winners were presented with the prestigious award by Ian Mackenzie, Chief Officer (Volunteers) at a ceremony at St John Ambulance’s historic headquarters in Clerkenwell, London.

The winners

This year’s winners include:

  • Benjamin, who helped to treat an elderly man who had collapsed while shopping
  • Aaron, who saved his dad’s life after he suffered a serious arm wound
  • Hannah, who attended to her mum when she fell down the stairs at home
  • Dominic Pearson and Ioannis Woodruff, who helped two people involved in a road traffic accident by treating leg and facial injuries while keeping the area safe
  • Kimberley, who saved the life of a young girl that had severely injured her arm while trampolining
  • Nathan, who alerted the ambulance service after witnessing his mother have a seizure.

Value of learning first aid

Ian Mackenzie honoured the young people and commented:

‘Each of the young people who have received this award has shown the importance of first aid in emergency situations. In some cases, they have been the difference between a life lost and a life saved, and they should all be very proud of their actions.’
