Top tips for hitting your marathon fundraising target

Marathon fundraising

With just a few weeks left until the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon, our events team are here with some top tips to help you over your fundraising finishing line.

Communicate what you are doing

The more people who know what you’re doing, the more money you’re likely to raise. Contacting friends, family and colleagues personally will make them more likely to engage with your fundraising efforts. Using photos or making a fundraising video is a great way to get the message across.

It's for charity

Let people know how the sponsorship they donate supports the charitable work of St John Ambulance. £1,800 can fund training for three new first aid trainers, or pay for an automated external defibrillator (AED) and a full day’s first aid training for a group of 12.

Be creative, keep things simple and make it fun

If you're organising a fundraising event, keep it simple and make sure you have a plan - whether your event is a post-marathon celebratory barbeque for 20 or a masquerade ball for 400. Find a venue, choose a date, pick a theme or idea and invite all your mates. Remember – you’ve still got time after the marathon to keep fundraising, so it’s not too late to hold an event.

Do something you love

Make your fundraising idea fit in with your hobby. If you play football, organise a fundraising football match, or follow in the footsteps of Jamie Oliver and cook for your friends.

Be persistent, but in a charming way!

Ask for donations and help with fundraising from friends and colleagues, but make sure you always keep your requests friendly. Publicly thanking each of those who have donated – in a Facebook status, tweet or email round the office – helps encourage others to do the same.

Sweep stake

Hold a sweep stake and ask colleagues to guess your finishing time for a £1 donation. Make sure there is a prize!  For all the tech lovers out there Guess to Give helps make this process simple and offers a prize incentive.

Sponsored costumes

If you’d never be seen in a tutu, tell people you will run the marathon in one if you double your target.
