During the Second World War, the Joint War
Organisation once again came together, to provide
voluntary first aid and nursing care to the injured and those in
need. Excluding those mobilised for active service, voluntary
membership in the UK reached almost 200,000.
1948 saw the formation of the NHS, requiring
local authorities to provide primary ambulance transport. From this
point on, St John Ambulance has supported local ambulance
trusts in times of need.
