Wendy Rushby from Derbyshire

Wendy Rushby, 1980sEast MidlandsFour generations of my family have been key volunteers of St John Ambulance in Derbyshire.

We have been involved in many key events over the years. My mum went to Rome in 1980 as part of the ‘Year of Nursing,’ working in an Italian hospital. She returned two years later and met the Pope while on duty in Vatican Square.

As part of the SJA Centenary in 1987, the whole family went to Hyde Park where there were thousands of people. I also took part in the celebration at the Albert Hall to mark 60 years of the Cadets.

The biggest event I have been involved in was Princess Diana’s funeral when we provided first aid for crowds who lined the route to Althorp in Northamptonshire where she was buried.

My role now is training others in first aid, which is very fulfilling.
